Amelia Shields ‘Suburban Dream’

IFAC Arts and The Yard Lower East Side in collaboration with Joaquin Goldstein present Amelia Shields ‘Suburban Dream’.

‘Suburban Dream’ brings together a cross-section of Shields vibrant paintings and mixed media assemblages. The artworks are imbued with a nostalgic sarcasm and personal symbolic narratives which balance on the edge of what is and what may be on the periphery of escaping the everyday chaotic commute through a longing for home.

The Suburbs…. that sprawling place between the city and the countryside buffered by fields and forests, housing subdivisions, aging shopping malls and lonely commuter car parks. A simulation that was but but never really existed still refuses to give up that the days of prosperity will return somehow in the 21st century.  Shields paintings have critical optimism and her enthusiastic and immediate methods of art making bring a welcome new perspective to this condition of American life through her own self analysis and personal reflection.

Amelia Shields is an artist born and raised in the suburbs of Newark, New Jersey. The daughter of two educators, her youth was spent wandering her mothers art room and bird watching alongside her father, an acclaimed Meadowlands photographer. Her adulthood is a continuation of the consummation of inspiration through the duality of this particular ecosystem; beautiful but uninviting, toxic but flourishing. Upon completing her BFA at New Jersey City University in 2018 she secured a studio in the basement of Mana Contemporary where she currently works.

Special thanks to Michaeline Sander the art director at the yard for her dedication and support over the years.
