50 Years of Painting
East Village Abstract Expressionism
May 19-June 10, 2012'

Born in 1942, Nico Dios Smith is a true modernist painter of the New York school. He has been a resident of New York's East Village-Lower East Side community since the late 50's and began exhibiting in the early 1960's on the historic East 10th Street “Gallery Row”. Due to his very private lifestyle he has yet to be truly seen for his genuine talent and enormous body of work which has rarely been seen outside of his studio and the East Village in the past 30 years.

Peanut Underground Art Projects New York is pleased to present Nico Smith - 50 years of Painting - East Village Abstract Expressionism.

Due to his very private lifestyle he has yet to be truly seen for his genuine talent and enormous body of work, which has rarely been seen outside of his studio in the past 30 years. We currently have a selection of seminal paintings created between the late 70's to mid 90's. We are also pleased to offer a selection of his more recent works as well.

Nico is a poet too and over the past 30 years has performed numerous times at Collective Unconscious, Surf Reality, and the Bowery Poetry Club. He has written a manifesto on Modernism in the 21st Century, and is the subject of the short story “TTOP”, both on view at Peanut Underground.

Nico is also a collector of objects from other worlds.
